Buddha Temple/Dalai Hill
The Happy Valley, as the name suggests, was a place for fun and gaiety during the British period with the famous Charleville hotel as the prime hub. The Happy Valley Club was one of the most happening dos of those times. Presently, the vicinity belongs to the Lal Bahadur Shashtri National Academy of Administration. The Valley is also the home to the Tibetans who have established an elaborated Gompa (the first Tibetan temple in India) and a Chorten (stupa) on the Dalai Hill which becomes prominent with hundreds of colorful Tharchuk (praying flags). After the Chinese occupation of Tibet, The Dalai Lama followed by Tibetan people made Happy Valley his home, later The Dalai Lama shifted his seat and office to Mcleodganj in Himachal Pradesh. In the year 1960, the Indian government opened up a school for Tibetan children in Happy Valley which still remains one reputed school by the name Sambhota Tibetan School (former Central School for Tibetans) educating Tibetan and Indian scholars alike. Mahapandit Rahul Sankrityayan, who is also known as the father of Hindi travel literature, lived with his family for some years in the present Central School’s dispensary building. The pathway between Central School’s main gate and the Buddhist Gompa is named in honor of Rahul Sankrityayan.
